Unravelling Squish To Condish: Brilliant or Bogus?
The major problem with curly hair is the inability to hold moisture, leading to stringy, dry, and lifeless curls. Many of us think that the answer is applying copious amounts of conditioner. However, Melissa Stites, the founder of ‘squish to Condish’, proved that using only hair conditioner without enough water cannot provide total hydration to hair.
With squish to condish, both water and conditioner work in tandem. This technique involves manipulating curly hair by squishing or scrunching upwards to raise hair cuticles and forcing the water inside. By pushing water into the hair and sealing them with conditioner, she achieved moisturized, bouncy, and well-defined curls that held their shape even a few days after being styled.
This method works wonderfully for all types of curly and wavy hair and has multiple benefits!

The best part is that you don’t need to apply a leave-in conditioner, as the water alone provides enough moisturisation!
How To Use Conditioner For The Squish To Condish Technique
No more praying to the curl Gods for a good hair day! Take matters into your own hands by incorporating squish to condish into your haircare routine.
Mild Shampoo Is The Way To Go!
Shampooing your hair is the start of any haircare routine. It cleans the scalp, removes excess oil and encourages hair growth. Washing your hair with just a hair conditioner is called co-wash and is used by curlies to expand a wash cycle.
If you are in the market for mild shampoo, check out Femica haircare products here.
Apply Conditioner And Detangle Thoroughly
Slather on your favourite curl-friendly conditioner and gently detangle your hair. Fingers or a wide-toothed comb can do the job of detangling. Doing this will make it easier for you to create curl clumps and reduce hair fall.
A helpful tip from Femica– over-conditioning is unnecessary. Stop when your hair feels slippery like seaweed!
Scrunch, Scrunch, Scrunch!
Now comes the fun (sometimes painful) part!
Flip your hair upside down, take some water in your palms and gently start squeezing upwards. Press your fingers together and release them to create clumps. Use an adequate amount of water in this process. Be prepared to hear some loud and clear “squelching” sounds!
Reload And Repeat
Take some more water and continue squishing. If you feel the onset of frizzy hair or drying, apply more conditioner and continue this process.
Repeat at least twice. The goal is to slowly rinse out the conditioner while infusing water into your hair strands. Once the hair is no longer dripping wet, wrap it in a soft microfibre towel and leave it to dry!

FAQs
1. Is there any specific conditioner I must use for the squish to condish technique?
No, but it is always better to use cream-based conditioners high in oils and fats. This is because they emulsify easily and absorb water better.
2. How long will it take for me to see results after I start doing this technique?
If you are just starting your curly hair care journey, you will notice defined and frizz-free curls after the first wash! But, if you are switching to the squish to condish method from another technique, results can be seen within 3-4 washes.
3. What are some great curly hair-friendly brands available at Femica?
A few of our favourites are Curlin, Fix My Curls, True Frog, Spantra and Anveya.
